"EWWWWW, Cool, Gross!" These are the words I want to hear my students saying. I know when they are interested they are learning. Let's get kids interested and excited about science again! One way to do this is through Forensics! Everything from fingerprints to blood-what more could you want?
My students are amazing!
They are all eager to learn and get their hands dirty in science. Even when they seem apprehensive, there's nothing like a dissection to win them over! Simply put when you make science engaging and applicable students become hooked! And though my students have had limited access to quality science education, once they are given the chance to explore and express their ideas they become engaged. Most of my students are the first to graduate high school in their family and some even go on to major in science in college. Our school is small and our budget is limited, but this is no reason why our students shouldn't be afforded to same opportunities as others.
My Project
Imagine the student who was always a 'problem' stand up and get up on stage to receive his award at the annual science fair. Why did he win this year? Because he was given a voice and a chance to really explore his interests in science and used this to create a fantastic project that won over the judges. With these resources more of my students will have the opportunity to create their own experiments and showcase them in our annual science fair this spring. (This year will be our 8th science fair).
This project is important because science is so important.
Few minorities chose science as a career and this is in part because these are typically the students who do not have access to a quality science education. Let's change this by affording our students an opportunity to not only get their hands dirty but really become engaged and excited about science!
