Forensic Laboratory Science

In this lesson, middle school students are introduced to chemistry. They mix materials and describe their observations without opinion or prejudice. A forensic scientist must analyze evidence without believing that any particular individual is guilty. This lab provides the opportunity for students to practice giving an objective analysis. A good safety rule in the lab is to assume that all chemicals are dangerous. To acquaint students with this concept, I want them to get used to wearing chemical gloves and splash goggles when doing any laboratory experiment. At the end of the unit, students are allowed, with careful supervision, to use a chemical that can cause skin irritation. Familiarity with wearing protective equipment will prevent accidental contact. As Science Specialist at Claremont Math & Science Academy, I conduct the activities in the lab, in conjunction with the classroom teachers?lessons. Claremont is an inner-city school with a can-do attitude and teachers who expect better than "good enough." For this lab activity, we need 20 pairs of chemical resistant gloves, 20 chemical resistant aprons, and 20 sets of chemical splash goggles. The drive to unlock the mystery of some crime through the application of science is real and is what drives forensic scientists. Through this lab activity, students will gain understanding of the connection between school work and the real world.
