My students need owl pellets from north western and south eastern owls to compare their diets and ecosystems and construct a food web based on their findings.

My Students

My students come into my classroom everyday full of energy, ready to learn, and excited for what we will do in science today! I have many students who need hands on, concrete experiences to help them with science concepts.

I teach in a rural area in Florida with a high minority and farm worker population and many of my students are on the free and reduced meal program.

All of our feeder schools are Title I schools and our science lab is always in need of materials to help my students have authentic science experiences.

I work with an awesome team of teachers, and our hope is to obtain laboratory materials that will help our students explore human impacts on the Earth and environmental concepts that will help them learn ways to make a difference and become good stewards of the Earth.

My Project

I teach life science to eager 7th graders. This project will give them hands on experience of the concepts we are learning about ecology and environments. We will research the ecosystems of two types of owls, south eastern owls (near us) and north western owls, and compare the diets of owls from two different ecosystems.

Practicing real scientific processes and hands-on scientific investigation will encourage them to pursue scientific careers .

My Project

Ecology and food webs are key concepts in 7th grade science. Owl pellets give students a unique opportunity to explore how organisms in an ecosystem are connected. We want to extend the experience by comparing the pellets of owls from two different ecosystems. Will owls in the cold north west eat the same things as owls from wooded areas of the south east? Let's find out!

Owl pellet dissection gives students a real life forensic mystery to solve. It also helps them practice the scientific method because it emphasizes the need for making careful, accurate observations to classify the type of bone found and which organism it came from. We will research and investigate the ecosystems the owls live in, how they depend on other species, and how we are all connected. We will follow up with collecting class data and graphing our results to practice interdisciplinary math skills.
