My Project

I have enjoyed replenishing supplies and infusing new art projects with all the Donors Choose projects I have ever done but this time I want to inspire artistic expression in another way. Our students in middle school aren't always on board with the value of reading. Reading for fun. We have an SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) class every day where students are expected to read for 30 min. Too often students are just not into it and feel that reading is a chore.

The fact is, reading a physical book can build new neuro-pathways and increase intelligence.

It also inspires the imagination and can teach things in a way that the lecture cannot. I hope that the SSR classes that I teach might all discover that reading can be quite satisfying. I keep a small library in my room of books that students can use in SSR if they forgot to bring a book. My current books are a bit stale and not very many are ones that the middle school child can really appreciate. The books I have chosen here not only target that age reader on an easy read level but the subjects teach values and gets them thinking.
