Help me give my students a love for reading instead of reading for a grade. Literacy in the United States is at an all-time low and we need to foster a love for reading!
My students are predominantly Chinese or Chinese-Americans in the heart of Chinatown, NYC and between COVID and the rise in Asian hate crimes, they deserve high-interest books to lose themselves in. This year will be tricky to navigate but we are trying to make it as interesting as possible for them. While "just-right" level books are abundant in schools across NYC, what would generate an authentic love for reading is to not lock these kids in a box of what level they SHOULD be reading. I want my students to read for the love of reading and that is why I am starting this fundraiser. I want to invest in more high-interest books in various genres so they will pick up a book and read by themselves instead of someone constantly reminding them to read.
My Project
I want my students to pick up books with interest and get lost in a good book (or 2 or 3 or more). We will still need to follow the "just-right levels (JRLs)" for reading but I hate the idea that they're boxed into a reading level when they may have interest in books outside their levels. Along with their JRLs, they can pick however many books that interest them to take home to read for their own pleasure. A love for reading is a love for learning. I believe this will help us start off the year in the right direction. Thank you!
