Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a 9th-12th Community-Based Instruction program for students with moderate to severe needs in a school that serves approximately ninety percent, Latino students. The program serves students with autism, health impairments, and intellectual disability. In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status. My students are working toward gaining and improving life skills, vocational skills, and functional academics.

Our program is designed to provide students with meaningful and engaging hands-on learning experiences that will help them obtain functional academic skills, and the skills necessary for transitions to adulthood.

I am very excited to see the program grow every year. Although this is a very exciting experience, it is also a challenging one. I need to ensure that I meet all of my students' needs; for some, it means being equipped with functional skills to be independent young adults.

My Project

The use of anime is almost a daily in our class, especially during reading activities. Using students’ interests, such as anime, helps my students make connections and understand literature concepts. They are able to apply character analysis, identify setting and plot, all while enjoying the activities. It brings joy to hear my students ask for manga (Japanese graphic novels) to read at home. All my students are reading well below grade level, manga do not only offer high interest text, it also provides visual supports such as those in graphic novels. Manga provide my students with the opportunity to engage in reading without high levels of frustration.

By donating to our project, you will not only help me provide each student with manga they can read at home, you will ultimately help increase their reading activity at home, thus helping improve their reading level.

Students will be able to practice reading skills at home and learn to appreciate reading for pleasure.
