Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are special in their way of thinking, learning, and exploring the world around them.

The school is enrolled with over 70% of English language learners. They are very eager to succeed in all dimensions of the school community and eager to strive beyond the classroom.

This donation will make a huge difference in the learning opportunities for all my first graders as they will get exposed to a range of stories written by award winning authors. It would impact their reading engagement in Literacy, Writing, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)

My Project

The books from this project would give my students more exposure to read alouds that are empowering, culturally relevant, while also being content based. Students in first grade are suppose to be read to consistently throughout the day to develop their oral comprehension, vocabulary , and information processing skills.

Our school is a dual language school where students are learning content in both Spanish and English.

The books in this project connect with our Ethnic Studies units (which is our literacy block), the STEAM units, and with our social-emotional program.

Within our Ethnic Studies units the books in this project would widen their knowledge of family diversity, skin color, hair, their history and their ancestors. The literature from these books contain stories and topics relevant to my students and their family backgrounds. Topics include immigration, traditions, ancestors, identify, and self-empowerment of knowing who you are and what your capable of as a contributing citizen.

In addition, I also included read alouds that will help cultivate an environment where students are kind/respectful, accepting to others differences, and resilient when encountering new demanding tasks.

There are never enough books to cover all that ways we try to instill respect and life long learning in these wonderful little humans. I read to my students everyday so if this project gets fully funded, just know the difference will go a long way everyday throughout the year and for years to come!
