My students need books for independent reading, explorations in science, writing inspiration, and pure enjoyment like Slither and Crawl and the Science Detective Series!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember reading a favorite book over and over again until the pages were worn and you could recite the next word before you even got to it? That is my dream for the students in my class - a level of engagement and passion in reading no matter what the text is about.
“We should not teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.
Knowing the contents of a few works of literature is a trivial achievement. Being inclined to go on reading is a great achievement.” A great achievement I would love to see. The students in my 3rd grade class have grown to love independent reading time since our last project was funded! Sometimes you can hear a pin drop because they are all engaged, sometimes there is chatter because they feel compelled to share something they have read with a classmate, and there are those other times when they sneakily try to read the same book over and over instead of branch out into something more challenging. My goal is to intertwine books that fit into our curriculum into the leveled library. I know my kids and their interests but most times they refrain from going towards the science and social studies section of the book bins. Some texts are lackluster and not pertaining to the 3rd grade curriculum but you can help change that.
My Project
I am asking for books that are engaging, lyrical, and have figurative language as well as interesting content. Most content area books read like textbooks and cannot hold the attention of students but the books I chose can change that. They are meant to fit with class lessons, homework, research topics, writing strategies, and interdisciplinary activities. They will enhance Science and Social Studies learning of forces and motion, adaptations in animals, measuring matter, and exploring world cultures. They will provide examples of fictional narratives that we read and write using fun models. Examples of character motivations and actions in text, dialogue usage, sequencing of events of chapter books, and comparing and contrasting different texts. They loved a book so much that I am asking for the others of the same series. Please help this dream come alive and help my students boost their knowledge without even realizing it!
“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” Please help in filling my library with the right books for my students who do not have access to these reading materials at home or in class right now.
I am hoping to spark an interest in my students so then they may take something they read and go learn more about it. Science and Social Studies are just as important as the other subjects and it needs to be recognized. Thank you!
