Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"First, you learn to read, then you read to learn." This is the challenge facing my 3rd graders this year and the next. We have been working through our small classroom library, sharing our connections, visualizations, questions, and inferences. We are in need of more quality literature to share!

I'm the lucky teacher of 20 amazing students at a small charter school in California.

One way our school helps foster each child, we have a looping system- which means I have the opportunity to teach this group of children both 3rd and 4th grade. This group of children are full of questions about the world we live in, they love laughing and sharing about their lives. Every child in my classroom brings a unique perspective to our classroom, and its discussions. We are a classroom full of diversity, and celebrate our uniqueness through our art, writing and especially in our study of literature.

My Project

Right now, my students are craving deep, meaningful literature. Recently, we have been combining chapter books and shorter picture books to study story elements (characterization, plot, etc.) and the more difficult reading strategies (inferencing, questioning, synthesizing, etc.). They have made some amazing leaps in bounds connecting their lives to the literature we have read and characters we have met. Their enthusiasm and love for reading is just now blossoming! We are nearing the slim pickings of our classroom library, and I want to continue to feed their appetites for meaningful literature! Please support these readers by helping supply our classroom with books that explore social issues, family relations, cultural traditions, historical events, and celebrating individuality! These books will also be used as spring boards to enhance our writing process and influence our art appreciation classes.

"Reading is knowledge, and knowledge is power!" This has our class motto.

Each student in my classroom understands how important reading is to be a healthy, educated person. With the help of these new books, you would be giving my students the opportunity to experience and explore lives, times, events and place in our world they would never have the chance to do on their own. Help expand their horizons, enrich their perspectives and encourage their love of reading!
