This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come primarily from low-income families that cannot afford to provide a variety of books at their children's reading and interest levels. Since placing a few "Who Was/Is...", "What Was..." books and fictional comic books into our class library, my students enjoy reading, but those few books simply are not enough for a classroom full of eager to read nonfiction 5th graders.

My students need a classroom library that includes a variety of nonfiction books so they can read to learn science and historical information and be inspired.

They need books on topics that interest them, such as famous athletes and historical figures like "Muhammid Ali- The Greatest of All Time (Show Me History)", "Who Was Roberto Clemente?", "Who Was Sitting Bull?", "Who Was Harriet Beecher Stowe?", and historical events such as "What was the Holocaust?" and "What was the Great Depression?"

A comics book can provide the reluctant reader the additional pictures needed to comprehend what is being read, thus improving their confidence. Science books, such as "The Science of Baseball with Max Axiom, Super Scientist", "Understanding Global Warming with Max Axiom, Super Scientist (Graphic Science)" or biographies on minorities such as "Frida Kahlo: The Revolutionary Painter! (Show Me History!)" or "Anne Frank: Witness to History! (Show Me History!)" provide the starting point to spark kids curiosity about their world. They will gain a greater appreciation for the diversity and history of our country as they read and build projects to share with their classmates. They will practice our reading strategies when they read these books during our independent reading time and share their opinions with their classmates about a variety of topics.
