My Students
My students are true Detroiters. They are dedicated to surviving and their education is just one part of that survival. The majority of my students are from single parent, low income homes, and the neighborhood in which the school is located and the students reside is very impoverished. They attend school to escape the issues at home, some come to make sure they get breakfast and lunch for the day, and others show up because the shelter's policy is to leave and come back later in the day.
My babies are dedicated to be successful, even though there may be major learning gaps and learning deficiencies.
My students have an interior drive to be successful, as well as the support of their teachers, school staff and their family. They get frustrated at times, they study during lunch/recess and support one another over the phone to complete assignments/projects in order to reach the expectation that has been put before them. Incentives are also a positive driving force for my students to step outside their comfort zones and be a model students or peer teacher in some situations.
My Project
My students are returning to school after 17 months outside of the "traditional" classroom, and this transition is going to be challenging for all of us. The virtual learning experience was simply that, an experience and my students have a number of good and bad experiences in March 2020. We have dealt with not seeing one another, not having traditional ceremonies, and not even being able to graduate and be celebrated for their hard work and dedication to their academic success. 2021, we are going to hit reset and get back into the grove of school as best as possible.
Our building is older, two floors, no air and at times, the inside can be just as hot and humid as the outside.
The requested air cooler will keep our learning environment comfortable for my student throughout the day, similar to their home learning environment. My students have a 60 minute Small Group Instruction class, SGI, built into their daily schedule. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards will be used for supplemental materials such as games and activities to compliment our curriculum materials and to assist with filling learning gaps created during the pandemic and the swift shift to virtual learning. Lastly, the Scholastic magazines will support their Reading and Math curriculum, allowing my babies to see where and how Math is used in the real world.
