Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been a first-grade teacher in a city school in Illinois for over fifteen years. My students live in low-income households from a beautifully diverse area of Chicago. Hispanic, African-American, and Arab families send their children to our school.
My classroom is filled with students who are alive with curiosity.
I embrace this energy by using a workshop model during reading and math. The students work with partners, work independently on concepts at their level, use technology, and work with me in small groups. One of the most gratifying aspects of this method is watching the students take ownership of their learning and become confident students at such a young age.
My Project
For over 15 years, I have been teaching children to read using the best hands-on, interactive, engaging ways I know. As many primary teachers might say, I love reading! Three years ago, I looked at my math program and wondered why it wasn't as creative and exciting. I felt that this needed to change. Since then, I have been developing a Math Workshop approach in my classroom.
I LOVE math as much as reading and my classroom should reflect that.
I need help to iron out the issues I have been experiencing. I feel that these texts will help me plan for small group instruction and create engaging and purposeful math activities for my math students...my 1st grade mathematicians.
