My Students

I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are identified with Autism or a developmental disability, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I am fortunate enough to have great parental support from my students' families.

We are a Leader In Me School where everyone can be a leader.

Everyone has genius, and we develop the whole child by building relationships and empowering students.

My students are in grades kindergarten through second and spend many years with me, so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning. We also partner with other classes in our school. We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade-level content at their level of understanding.

My Project

Learning how to read can be hard. First you learn the letters, then the sounds they make, then you put letters and sounds together to try to make a word, but words don't always follow the rules. It can be quite a challenge to learn to read especially for our younger boys who have ADHD. Staring at letters and trying to make words just doesn't work in my classroom.

My students need hands on learning centers for the alphabet, letter sounds, phonics and phonemic awareness so they can figure out how to build words through manipulation and learn those sight words that don't follow the phonics rules.

There are Instant Learning Centers where the students can work individually or with the help of a teacher for sight words, building words and working on short vowels which are always tricky. They can have fun practicing the tricky sight words with the fishing games. The phonics learning locks will work on sounds in different positions of the word. The fill in the blank tin sets work on alphabet, building words and phonemic awareness. Hopefully my students will become readers with all of these great materials and our guided reading program. Thank you for making my leaders great readers.
