My Students

I am the luckiest educator there is!! I get to be called teacher by the most amazing group of students. Despite any struggles they face- and some face hardships that most adults can't imagine- my students come to school everyday with a determination and a hopefulness that cannot be contained.

I learn as much from my students as they do from me.

I have learned words in Spanish, French, Farsi and Lao to name a few. I have seen children go from non readers to voracious readers and non speakers to loquacious speakers. We celebrate each accomplishment along the way no matter how small because to my students every milestone counts. My school lacks a lot of resources- technology and air conditioning to name a few, but what we lack in facilities, my students make up for in heart and tenacity and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else.

My Project

I teach a full inclusion classroom which combines students of special needs, typical peers and English language learners. We work together every day toward grade level mastery with reading levels that range from pre kindergarten to a middle school level. My students love when I read picture books to them and they love looking at the books and reading them independently. I often use these types of books as springboards into lessons that address our state standards and each book I choose quickly becomes a new favorite.

I have carefully and purposely chosen books that represent the diverse faces and backgrounds of my students.

One book, "Come On, Rain" is a beautifully written example of a narrative- a snapshot in time- that I check out from the library and use with my students every year. They are always heartbroken when I have to return it. Imagine the joy if they could read it whenever they wanted. One of my favorite books, “This Is The Rope" is a storytelling masterpiece that follows a rope through the growth of a family including a move during the great migration- yet another topic that is important to the culture of many of my students. Another book called "The Name Jar" follows a young girl who leaves Korea and comes to live in the United States- still one more example of characters and situations that so many of my students can relate to.

Since my students don't always have access to books at home, their only reading choices come from school. It is my hope that this project provides them with rich reading which builds a foundation of literacy skills as well as a love of learning that will take them anywhere they want to go- figuratively and literally!!
