For the Love of Listening

My students need four headphones and a CD player to listen to books on CDs in our listening center to enhance their literacy development.

My Students

My classroom full is of 5 & 6 year old Smarties! Many of which have had little exposure and interaction with books. Our day is packed full of learning in whole group, small group and learning center settings. My goal is to offer engaging activities that will have them ready for first grade.

My students, the Smarties, are awesome!

They are energetic five and six year olds eager to learn. They love listening to stories. Many of my Smarties come from single parent homes. Many have had little to no interaction with books and reading. The school in which I teach is a Title I school with a high percentage of our population on free or reduced lunch. We are also very diverse in ethnicities in which we have students from at least five different cultures. In my classroom alone I have students from all five cultures. So, for some of my students English is very limited. Aside from cultural differences my students are diverse in their learning behaviors. I have very hands-on learners as well as students with various special needs.

My Project

After just moving to Kindergarten after many years in first, a listening center is a need to help my students be exposed to more books and fluent reading. As I mentioned earlier, many of my students have had very little experience with books. Research shows students that are read to and with will be better readers. I hope to fill the gap of little interaction with books to a love for reading and in turn help get them on he road to becoming fluent readers. Listening to books in the reading center can also help with comprehension development, tracking print and understanding that words on a page convey meaning. They will use this listening center throughout the day in learning centers.

With your help I can get this missing tool up and running in my classroom and get my Smarties on the road to becoming fluent readers.

This will enable me to expose them to fluent reading as well as have them read to an additional time throughout the day.
