For The Love Of Books

My students need the Bluebonnet books which are high interest texts that help improve literacy and help them develop a love for reading: Spy Camp, Liar & Spy, and Pickle.

My Students

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is awarded to an author and his or her book each year that is selected by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade readers. My third graders love participating in this program. The idea that their vote and their opinion matters motivates many who struggle with reading to persevere.

I partner teach in a public school in Houston, Texas.

I have around 50 readers who come through my classroom each year. The last few years I have had 6-8 students out of the 50 who have characteristics of dyslexia. These students work overtime to make sense of characters and language. It's often hard by third grade to find things that interest them and motivate them to read. Other third graders are just making the jump from learning to read to reading to learn. Once they move into this level of reading they really start to look for what texts, genres, series or author's interest them most. The Texas Bluebonnet Award Program motivates many of my students to become critical readers. They want to make sure that their vote is cast for the very best book. They will read many books on the nomination list to make sure they select the very best book. Just like adults, children also enjoy a good magazine. I've added 4 title subscriptions to this project. These non-fiction resources will be a favorite.

My Project

My students need the Bluebonnet books which are high interest texts that help improve literacy and help them develop a love for reading: Spy Camp, Liar & Spy, and Pickle. Over the summer I read Reading Essentials by Regie Routman. It inspired me to reboot my classroom library. Routman's research shows that the classroom library, rather than the school or public library is the place where love of books is born. This project will add 1-2 of each of the current Texas Bluebonnet Nominated books to my classroom library. Third graders LOVE this program and are always interested to check out the books on the list from our school library. The fact that they get to vote for the winner is a huge source of inspiration and motivation. Our school librarian buys 2 or three of each of the titles on the Bluebonnet list. However, 4th and 5th graders get first dibs on checking these titles out of the school library. Most of my students have to wait until second semester to get their hands on these books. Contributing to this project means that my classroom library will have quality books that kids want to read. The magazine titles will also help provide variety of texts to our room.

Ernest Hemingway wrote, "All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterward it all belongs to you; the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was." These beautifully written books will become part of the story of each of the beautiful children in my classroom.

They will make them laugh, cry, think, and wonder.
