This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Art is extremely important to the development of the whole child. Studies show that children who participate in art do better in math, science, and reading. I want to ensure that my 30 third grade students are given multiple opportunities to participate in creating art this year.

My students are a diverse bunch of enthusiastic learners.

Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of their parents cannot afford for them to participate in extra-curricular activities, so the art they are exposed to in my classroom is often all there is. I have found that art is a leveler of the playing field. Children who often do not feel successful in some content areas really excel in art. This gives them an opportunity to shine, feel knowledgeable, and proud.

My Project

During our annual art unit we incorporate music, poetry, visual, and performing art to show the kids that emotions and perceptions are manifested in different art forms. I plan to have my students create two wire sculptures during this art unit. I would like one to be in response to a classical piece of music, a composition of their choosing, and another to a piece of poetry of their choosing. Students will try to visually represent sound via a wire sculpture!

Children struggle with ways to express themselves, and art is a wonderful outlet.

Elementary school has become entirely focused on test scores and pushing children. They need time to make connections, learn through discovery, and genuinely enjoy what they are doing. Art is a wonderful way to accomplish all these goals. Help my kids do art, not only for art's sake - but to better help them succeed!
