My Students
Is there a job better than mine? If you asked me, the answer would be no – without any hesitation. I wholeheartedly believe I have the best job in the world. I set my alarm each night knowing that I get to wake up to go teach the best class in the world, at the best school in the world. The students, the faculty, and the hard-working parents make my job a pleasure because we all share one thing – we value the importance of education.
Third grade is a major developmental year in which students display much growth in many key areas.
Students become more self-aware as they begin to apply deeper problem solving skills and analyze more complex pieces of literature. At this stage, children are able to take their writing to different depths as they experiment with multiple paragraph papers in various genres. Another noticeable area of development is independence – third graders’ blossom in their capabilities to perform different tasks independently. Because of these drastic maturations seen in children throughout the year, third grade is often considered to be a part of upper elementary grade levels.
My Project
What is more exciting than opening a student's mind to powerful and beautiful language? Sharing a book with students and seeing them lean into it, hugging it close, isn't just a gift for my students, but a gift for me too.
These books will open my students' minds to different perspectives and points of view.
The first book, The One and Only Ivan, can help my pupils understand that a story can be told from the point of view of a gorilla. We often take the concept of narrator for granted, but for eight-year-olds, not so much. The One and Only Ivan can give my students the experience to grasp this foundational concept. Next, the main character in Fish in a Tree is a bright girl with Dyslexia. It is so important to show the perspective of someone struggling. We all struggled in our lives. Through understanding, I hope to build tolerance and acceptance one book at a time. Finally, just because we all need to laugh and fall in love with a novel sometimes, I would love to share the bestselling book The Fourteenth Goldfish, but a Newbery Honor-winning author.
