My Students

A typical day in my classroom might look busy and a little noisy. It will not look like students in rows. Ever. My kids are working together, working with me, working with technology and working with creativity and thoughtful determination every day.

My students are amazing.

Last month they collected over 3,200 pounds of food for the local food bank. As if that wasn't enough, they then turned around and gave back the pizza party they earned because they knew that more food could be purchased for those in need. Our theme is "Pay it Forward." Our school is very community centered, but this particular group is kids is very special.

My Project

My students need a carpet. All whole group lessons and announcements happen with all of us sitting together on the floor. I find that the children listen more attentively, are more actively engaged and are kinder to one another when we sit together "family-style," we like to call it. I use songs and poetry to practice reading fluency. Sitting on the floor brings us together in a way that helps all kids participate in activities that might otherwise be more challenging individually or isolated in a desk.

Currently, our class meeting space contains a 5 by 7 foot rug It is much too small to contain even half of our class.

It defines the teaching space, but most kids are actually sitting on the linoleum. My students will still learn and will continue grow into the wonderful people that I can already see, but could do so more comfortably with a classroom rug. I would love to see them be rewarded in the same way that they are all so willing to do themselves. Pay it forward.
