My Students

My students love to explore Life Science animals in my classroom. Whether it is our gerbil, our mealworms, our sow bugs, our composting worms, or our two beta fish, just about every student gravitates to our live animals (no matter how gross they are!).

This project aims to discover what my students can learn about teaching a live animal (nearly) human language.

This will all be done through our new, target animals: parakeets!

Do I think this project is vital for all students in 6th and 8th grades? You bet your budgie I do!

My Project

My students are truly dedicated, but even I must face facts: they are now adolescents. As such, they can be (slightly) precocious, energetic, and intractable. No worries; I know just how to challenge them. A pair of precious and energetic parakeets are more than a suitable match for my students!

Like my students, these parakeets will need a warm, spacious, and safe home.

This wheeled bird cage is perfect for the job!

I plan to task my students with teaching common English phrases to our parakeets; this should get my students to think about their own behaviors, choices, and learning.

Why is this important? Well, teenagers love to complain about the cruelty of their situations. Teaching our parakeets empathy, kindness, health, humor, and social acceptance will make for some wonderful self-reflection.

When our students see our bird pair thriving in this beautiful, non-restrictive environment, perhaps they will consider the beauty and benefits of their lives as well.
