My Students

I work at a small elementary school on Chicago's Southwest side. Our principal refers to the school as the "Pearl on 79th Street" and I couldn't agree more. Through the hard work of students and staff, the school recently achieved the highest rating according to Chicago Public School's rating system.

Our students are smart, resilient, and inquisitive.

They enjoy engaging in creative investigation and art making, and like all children in all parts of the city, they deserve access to high quality arts instruction and resources.

My Project

The idea for this project began when walking into school one morning, I heard the sounds of a woodpecker in a tree. I asked one of my 6th grade students walking alongside me, "do you hear the woodpecker?" She looked at me stunned and asked "Is that really a woodpecker??" This was a sound she had heard all the time, but she had no idea it was an actual woodpecker living in her neighborhood!

My classroom is on the 3rd floor of the school building, and has 6 windows on one wall that overlook a line of trees.

Out of my own personal love for birds, I started leaving seed on the window sills, and installed a small plastic window feeder. Now every morning, I have a line of sparrows waiting to be fed! However they often leave when students enter the room and they become frightened.

This project would provide high quality feeders that can be easily maintained and permanently installed. It would also give us access to one way mirror film so that the birds are not scared when students go to the window. Kids will be able to observe the birds just inches away! With this project I will be collaborating with the science teachers in the building for students to record their observations of bird behavior, and the different species that come to the feeders as the year progresses. Students will create artworks inspired by the birds they see at the feeders, while learning about scientific illustration.

The opportunities for learning in science and art are broad, and the effect of this project on the school will last for years to come as the birds visit the kids in our art class.
