This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My goal is to provide as many hands-on learning opportunities as possible for my students. Bird study is good use of our limited resources; our school is close to a park and birds are, of course, everywhere.
My students need a class visit from an Audubon Bird Expert to provide an engaging, hands-on study of birds, their habitats and the environment. The program will foster science literacy, environmental awareness and a stewardship ethic.
My students are eager learners and are excited and proud when they share what they are learning through their writing and projects.
They also work well together. We have begun our bird study by reading the book "Pale Male" in class, which is a story about a Red-tailed Hawk who has made his home since the early 1990s near Central Park. My students are fascinated by this story. They are looking forward to learning more about birds and becoming "bird experts."
My Project
The main goal of For the Birds! is to get students excited about learning through hands-on discovery of the natural world that exists right in their own neighborhood. For the Birds! focuses on local birds and local habitats. This place-based learning encourages a sense of pride in one's own community. Gaining knowledge of the local environment empowers students to take an active interest in protecting it.
Through this study, my students will have the opportunity to build on the basic science literacy that they have developed in earlier grades.
They will learn to be unafraid to ask questions and to make observations and collect data in order to answer those questions and present what they have learned to their community. These skills are essential for a lifetime of learning.

(During an 8 session, elementary students in grades two through four learn about their local, natural environment through classroom lessons, outdoor field trips, and a conservation project designed to provide or enhance bird habitat in the local community.)
