My Project

As the social worker at two middle schools, I see a variety of needs within our student population. Oftentimes our students are exposed to gang violence, drugs, homelessness, and instability. The school becomes their safe haven and allows them the opportunity to learn skills they may not have the time to learn outside of our walls. When the students come to my office, they are coming to work through their trauma so we can reduce barriers to their learning and gain life skills for their future!

Counseling improves self-esteem, reduces anxiety, strengthens coping mechanisms, and improves social functioning.

The sensory items will assist me in working with children and adolescents on important life skills so that they can become successful and independent adults. Oftentimes in one-on-one settings, middle school students are hesitant to open up. Sensory items can help calm them and take their minds off the situation at hand so they can freely speak.

Games are an excellent way of helping students talk about or work through problems and emotions without even knowing they are doing so. We then apply those same skills and solutions to their real life challenges.
