Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban community. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingualism is embraced and supported.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Our running club and soccer club are up and running. Students are learning the basic skills of how to kick a soccer ball properly, how to dribble and how to shoot. Our more advanced students are already scrimmaging with each other learning to play competitively with sportsmanship always at the forefront. As students get more comfortable and confident in their skills I find that we need additional equipment to have two scrimmages going on at the same time. Therefore the additional set of goals, pinnies and soccer ball will help manage the number of students playing at once.

As students become engaged in our sports program their interest has expanded into other sports such at American Football.

Students in our community are exposed to fútbol (soccer) more frequently then American Football. Students have asked about the rules, the difference between the sports and ultimately how to play the game. With the football and flags requested I plan on coaching a smaller group on the fundamentals and rules of American Football.

Ultimately, I want my students to learn to play any form of organized sport to promote health, community building and most importantly sportsmanship.
