This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Food insecurity can significantly affect bilingual high school students, as many face additional challenges beyond those related to language barriers. For students who are already navigating the complexities of learning in a second language, hunger can further hinder their ability to focus, engage in classroom activities, and retain information. When students are unsure of when their next meal will come or have to worry about hunger during school hours, their cognitive function is diminished, making it harder for them to understand lessons or complete assignments. These students may also experience emotional stress, leading to feelings of anxiety or embarrassment that impact their confidence and participation.
Providing snacks in the classroom can alleviate some of these challenges and create a more conducive learning environment for bilingual students.
When teachers offer healthy snacks, it helps ensure that students are nourished and better able to concentrate on their studies. A snack break provides a quick, practical solution that can immediately improve focus and reduce feelings of hunger that may distract them from their lessons. Additionally, offering snacks can help students feel supported, fostering a sense of security in the classroom. This sense of care and attention can build trust and positive relationships between students and teachers, which are vital for a student's academic success.
Moreover, having snacks available can support bilingual students’ social and emotional well-being. Sharing food can be a bonding experience, allowing students to feel more integrated within the school community and less isolated. For those experiencing food insecurity at home, knowing that they can rely on a teacher for something as simple as a snack can help them feel valued. This small act of kindness can boost their self-esteem, making them more likely to engage positively with peers and seek help when needed.
