Food Security Through Preservation Techniques

Help me give my students the tools and hands-on experience they need to learn food preservation, self-sufficiency, and sustainability through canning and dehydrating.

My Project

My students are eager to learn the skills that help communities thrive independently and sustainably. Through our class on self-sufficiency, permaculture, and food preservation, we explore how to care for the Earth, reduce waste, and preserve the harvest. To make these lessons meaningful and hands-on, we need tools that allow students to experience the full cycle of growing, harvesting, and preserving food.

To bring these lessons to life, we need a food dehydrator, a pressure canner, and canning supplies.

With these tools, students will be able to preserve fruits, vegetables, and other foods they’ve helped grow and harvest. They’ll learn how to dehydrate, can, and store food safely—skills that people have relied on for generations.

These resources will help students experience the pride of preserving their own food, reduce waste by making the most of seasonal harvests, share what they create with classmates, families, and the community, and build lifelong skills in resilience, self-reliance, and sustainability.

Many young people today are disconnected from the origins of their food and the traditions of food preservation. By learning how to dehydrate and can food, students gain practical knowledge while developing a deeper appreciation for the work and wisdom of past generations.

Your support will give my students the chance to practice these hands-on skills, connect with nature, and strengthen their sense of community. Together, we can help them grow into resourceful, confident individuals who know how to take care of themselves and others.
