My students need nutrition cards and activities, baking labs and a food chemistry kit to be able to see the connection between food and science.

My Students
Almost everyday I have a student ask me, "Why does this matter? How will I ever use this outside of school?" In order to fully answer those questions, students need to apply the knowledge that they are learning at school in their daily lives.
My students are in 6th-8th grade and come from low-income families.
Nutrition and healthy eating are not emphasized at home; as a result, they are not aware of the impact that food has on their bodies. Most of their meals come from a box or freezer and are prepared in the microwave. The students do not know how to read nutrition labels and are unaware of the ingredients that are in their food.
My Project
I am requesting curriculum materials for me to use in my Food Science class. This is a new class that is being offered to 6th - 8th grade students at my school. Since this is a new class, I do not have any materials to use for my instruction. I am requesting reading materials and lesson ideas. I am also asking for a lab kit that will show students the chemical composition of their food.
These materials will help me show students how science relates to the food that they eat everyday.
The majority of my students are not aware of the ingredients in their food. By using this curriculum, my students will become aware of what they are eating and will be able to use this new information when making healthy food choices.
