Help me give my students an opportunity to learn about science through the joy of hands-on food science, while sharing their cultural cuisine with peers, parents and the larger community.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work at MHS, a continuation school for juniors and seniors who have struggled to succeed in their previous comprehensive high schools. My students want hands-on learning experiences that feel hyper-relevant to their lives and their career goals. Food science is a course topic that I have wanted to teach for several years. I'm currently developing a project-based learning unit on food in collaboration with my colleagues in history, English, and math. I have requested items that would give students an opportunity to experience the science of cooking while gaining critical job skills, and connecting to their culture. As a school with a 97% Latinx population, many students have expressed interest in learning and sharing cultural foods with their peers and the larger community. Having these kitchen supplies would open up many doors for our students outside of just food science units, we could do community meals with both students, their families, and the larger San Rafael community.
