My Project
Have you ever heard about "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs"? This refers to the idea that students need aspects of these areas in order to succeed: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. The lowest foundational block of these, physiological, means that students need things like adequate sleep, water, and nourishment (food) in order to thrive. Unfortunately, many of my students come into class without having these needs met, not always through their choice, but sometimes through circumstances out of their control.
This project will fund snacks to keep in my classroom for when students come into their learning day without eating.
Many of my students come into class without having breakfast. Even though our school offers breakfast, many students are unable to get to school early enough to take advantage of this resource. Furthermore, breakfast is at 7:50AM, and our lunch doesn't occur until 12:40PM. This means that if students are unable to bring appropriate snacks, they do not eat for FIVE HOURS in the middle of the day. We know that as humans, if we are hungry, we cannot even think straight, so how are students supposed to learn, grow, and reach all of the wonderful potential that we know they are capable of?
This project strives to ensure that my classroom is always equipped to help students stay fed and able to learn.
