Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I want to provide all I can for my students to have the most memorable educational experience. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds. We have over 1000 students in our school. Over 80% of them are receiving free or reduced-price lunches daily. Over half of the student body is Latino and we have an extremely large ESL population. Over 35% of my students are classified as special needs. The students who attend my school are hard-working. Even though most of our students come from economically deprived households, this does not stop them from giving their best in my classroom.

My students are such hard workers and caring children.

I am so lucky to be their teacher. I am proud of all they have achieved. Even though they do not have much, they have big hearts and have an amazing work ethic! They also want to help and contribute to our community and society! They want to learn more so they can give back more. I want to help them do that.

My Project

This year, due to COVID-19, our lunch schedules have drastically changed. Students are letting me know how hungry they are and I would love to give them a snack so they can fill their bellies and focus on what we are learning instead of focusing on their hunger.

Snacks can help keep the students alert and attentive to the learning taking place in the classroom.

A healthy snack can help encourage concentration and re-energize tired students. In addition, snack breaks can help students perform better on tests. These snacks will let the students know they are loved, safe, and cared for.

By providing the students with healthy snacks, I'm not only investing in higher academic performance in the classroom, but I'm also investing in their personal well being. Students need healthy snacks and water to remain focused in class. These snacks will also ensure that students will be successful in the classroom because they will have brain food.

Food scarcity is real. My students have gone through a lot lately and the changes in their schedules to just being back full time in school is a real adjustment. Having these snacks to give out to whoever is hungry will help many students during this school year.

With the last batch of snacks, I was granted through a DonorsChoose project, I was able to meet the needs of over 100 students. This time I added more cups of soup because my students really enjoyed having that extra nourishment. With these snacks we can say, here you go, have a snack recharge, refocus and dive back into the lesson. It also says someone cares about you. In my family, feeding others is an act of love. Thank you for loving on my students with me.
