Here survival is a struggle, education is completely misunderstood, and violence is a vicious and never ending cycle. Students often feel hopeless and trapped in a world of brutality where bloodshed is as common as Saturday morning cartoons. This ever-present danger, hostility, and aggression takes a severe toll on a youths psyche. We must work together to bring the beauty of reading and education to the forefront of these students' minds. They must be pulled back from the negative trends and shown a brighter path. If we can not reach in and raise them up by hand then we must give them the vehicles with which to travel, books. These can act as portals for them which repair and nourish their souls. I teach 10th grade English in a very high-need community. My students live in a world in which reading is rarely done and almost never enjoyed. However, they are beginning to enjoy and appreciate it due to the availability of a classroom library. Students are watching other students read. They are beginning to talk about their books. Books and reading are just starting to seem interesting. Now they need the library to be revitalized. There is a vast world of books, so many of which could enrapture them. They need titles from different genres and at different reading levels specifically tailored for their tastes. With the right types of books, a love of reading is built organically. This type of growth is enduring and contagious. It is exactly what they need. You will empower my students to take those steps out of the darkness and into the realm of literature, education, and positivity. Their lives are drowned in negative reinforcements and your help will bring hope into their lives in a way that they cannot ignore. Your help would leave an enduring mark on their minds and souls feeding them as so many positive influences have fed us.
