My Project

My students are middle schoolers who have been diagnosed with Autism. These children are faced with daily struggles from emotional/behavioral disorders, learning disorders and physical/ medical disorders and some with a combination of disorders . But they show up to school daily despite these factors and they fight through their challenges to succeed. These students all come from low income families who struggle to make ends meet daily, many of these students are labeled as homeless and living in hotels/shelters. These students not only struggle from diagnosed disabilities but they often come into school and are hungry and thirsty. My goal is to constantly have food and drinks within the classroom so that students can come to school and know that their stomach will not be empty and that they will not be thirsty in the hot Florida weather. On a daily basis students come in without socks on or wearing the same pair of dirty socks 4 days in a row, many of them come in with the same shirts/ pants on the entire week or their shirts/ pants are ripped with holes, to big or to small. My goal is to provide these students with clothing that they can wear and be comfortable and not embarrassed when walking around campus. These students should not have to struggle and as a teacher I do my best to keep up with the supplies they need but it becomes difficult with my salary and the wants/needs of my own family. I just want to provide my students with the materials they need to be comfortable, feel safe, and to never have to feel hungry or feel without what they NEED.
