My Students

Cleveland Metro Schools has the unfortunate distinction of being the poorest school district in the country. The traumatic effects this has on our children are devastating; our children struggle to get their basic needs met, and as such have a much harder time focusing on academics and future goal development. Despite this, our students want a better life and are receptive to all adults in their lives who care about them and try to assist them in getting there. I primarily work with special needs students, who have the highest level of need among our population. Our students are super appreciative, and the smallest things make the biggest difference to them.

My Project

The students in my school are often hungry. When I work with them to assess their needs and provide social-emotional support, the first thing I need to do is make sure that their primary needs are met: food! I need to make sure that they are well-fed and not hungry before I begin to work with them and address their social and emotional needs. These children come from low socio-economic backgrounds and their parents work so hard to provide for their basic needs, but often cannot provide them with snacks for school. These snacks will allow them to focus on learning and growth.
