Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is for three classes at our school in the Boston area. Seventh-grade General Science, 11th-grade Chemistry, and 12th-grade Anatomy are using food so that students can gain a better understanding of how science relates to their culture.

Our students are primarily low-income, first-generation English Language Learners and our goal as a science team is to help students understand that we interact with science every single day.

We are requesting cookware, gas tubes, and other cooking resources. In 7th grade, they will be learning the basics of food science, including density, phase changes, and the basics of chemical reactions. Eleventh grade will be going more in depth, identifying and predicting reactions based on the properties of elements and bonds in the ingredients, as well as studying how energy is conserved and transferred across systems. Twelth grade will be taking a nutritious approach, looking at how compounds in foods affect different parts of the human body.

Eleventh grade Chemistry has chosen a variety of recipes from their culture from pupusas to baked mac and cheese. They will be hosting a "food science fair" where students can invite teachers and admin to try their chosen recipes as they explain the connections to the fundamental principles of chemistry!

Everything on our list is a one-time purchase that allows students across three grade levels to practice science in a way that isn't often done. These materials will allow us to do these projects for multiple years and will allow us to continue to inspire students who often believe they aren't a part of science.
