This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school year is winding down, but we aren't! My group of small scholars have been wonderful students this year. Every child has a strong, unique personality. Every student is at a different level academically. Most are Latino, and first or second generation Americans. They receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

Despite cultural and financial challenges, I know that my students can have the same growth mindset and executive functioning skills as their wealthier peers across the bay.

I am reminded of this when they tell me they love school and love learning. Students from this community are more than capable of achieving greatness, and I am excited to foster it!

My Project

When a student of mine bumped her head on the playground recently, I took her to the office (we don't have a nurse). I was surprised to find just three old ice packs in a small freezer for the whole school. There are three problems with this: our district needs to hire more nurses, the ice pack should have been closer to the playground, and there should have been more than THREE for the whole school (!!!) I also have a few students who complain about being hungry throughout the day, so a refrigerator/freezer for the classroom is essential.

A refrigerator will allow me to keep healthy fruits and vegetables airtight (preventing mice) for hungry students, and hold ice packs for minor bumps that happen in and out of class.

In a class full of 5-6 year olds, bumps are inevitable. Their bodies are growing very fast too and I don't want them to lose focus because their school breakfast was too small.
