My Students

What did you do today before you read this? Did you even have to think about your actions or did they come easily to you? My special needs students manage everyday activities in their lives in a variety of ways, ways that most of us can only imagine.

In my high school, I teach a variety of students all in the same classroom.

My broadcast class is the most inclusive in our school, including students with severe disabilities, students with visual impairments, and students with limited mobility. I have students who use canes to feel their way around the world as well as wheelchairs to get from place to place. Some may not have mobility of their upper limbs. Others may seem to have no problem with transporting themselves but have a very real physical struggle. These special needs students and my general education students interact each class period in my broadcast class. Together, we create a daily broadcast for the entire school and film feature stories. We help each other with each task. For example, some students may have buddies who help them present the weather forecast or even just hold a camera for them.

My Project

In our latest assignment, I asked students to film a feature story about an experience that is important to them. Because many of my students cannot walk or even hold a camera steady or at all, they need to have a buddy with them to complete the task. In order to make these special needs students more independent, I would like to have a GoPro camera that I can attach to their wheelchairs or their bodies so that they can record the world around them. Specifically, several of the students would like to record a day in their lives to show others what it is like to complete everyday activities,(# a day in our shoes). One of my students in a wheelchair would like to use the camera to record his journey from our school to his mother’s office over two miles away. He has to cross many obstacles, as well as attitudes, each day just to commute. By having the GoPro, these students will be able to give us all a glimpse into their daily struggles.

With the donation of the camera, my special needs students will feel more independent and able to tell their own stories.

They will be able to convey to others what they go through on a daily basis with a visual story. Perhaps this visual will positively influence those who do not understand why it takes so long for a person to cross the street or navigate through a school or store. Perhaps they will finally realize the real story of others’ lives and live more gently and mindfully.
