I need advanced professional development in implementing Reading Workshop for my upper elementary school students.

My Students

Our school serves students from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. The student body includes about four hundred and fifty students altogether. The student body is widely diverse and fifty-five percent of students come from low-income families. Our school is a Title One school.

My fifth-grade class includes twenty-six, fabulous, inquisitive learners.

Our classroom setting includes students with different interests, experiences, learning styles and needs.

We strive to create a comfortable school environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills.

My Project

As a teacher, I see my role as being a lifelong learner. I am constantly learning and adapting alongside my students. This past year has presented countless challenges as we shifted learning from in-person to remote. I modified instruction and carved out more spaces for social emotional learning than ever before. One aspect about distance learning that benefited my teaching practice is that it encouraged me to connect with professional development resources across the country that were suddenly being offered virtually.

I would love the opportunity to attend Teachers College's Reading Institute this summer to further advance my literacy instruction.

Going into my ninth year of teaching, I know that I have so much more to learn. This would be an incredible opportunity to connect with like-minded educators who are also experienced in implementing Reading Workshop. I can also get new ideas for supporting the fifth grade learners at my Title One school.
