My Students
My special education students are amazing and creative kids. They are always coming up with new and unique ways to solve problems. Learning and social situations are often difficult for them yet, they persevere and continue grow.
Even though they often struggle with math, reading, writing, and social skills they are not afraid to learn and try new things.
They work harder and reach farther than their general education peers. Everyday they face new challenges to overcome. And every day they push forward and try their best. They find joy in the little things. Even though learning is difficult they still love to learn and try new things. Each day I am awed by the things they learn and unique way they see the world.
As I teach them and help them through each day they constantly inspire me to learn more and become better. I want to learn and grow into the people they were meant to be. Their excitement for learning and life inspires me as a teacher.
My Project
We have all sat through that long meeting in that uncomfortable chair. You know the one I am talking about, its hard, it's plastic, and it's often worn out. It's the chair that makes it difficult to focus and complete tasks. The one where your can't wait to stand up and hope you never have to sit in again.
Unfortunately, for my active, special education students that uncomfortable chair is a daily reality.
Our elementary special education classroom is furnished with adult sized tables and plastic folding chairs. While many of my students would love to, and often need to, wiggle while they learn, they can't. Instead they have to sit up in uncomfortable, plastic, folding chairs, designed for adults.
I created this project with the hope of giving my students seating designed for them and their unique needs. If this project is funded my students will have the option to sit and learn in chairs that are not only the right size but, designed to meet their unique learning needs as well.
