Informal learning centers, such as zoos, museums, planetariums and the like, stimulate student thinking in ways that are different from the learning that comes from reading or classwork. Since scrapbooking is a popular creative activity these days I plan to combine these ideas with a picture taking "scavenger hunt" of sorts for the students' trip to the zoo. This field trip is in conjunction with our third grade science unit "Structures of Life" which guides the children to notice the similarities and differences in birds, mammals, and amphibians. Students are given a list of general ideas to take pictures of. For example, "Take a picture of an animal that is comfortable in water." This could be a heron, an otter or a crocodile. "Take a picture of an animal that lives in a nest" might produce a chicken, a squirrel, or a wasp. The children can be as creative as they can be within the structure of the prompt. When we return to school, the pictures are assembled in a scrapbook format. The children write descriptions of how the animal portrayed fits the prompt, incorporating language arts and science.
As Science Specialist at Claremont Math & Science Academy, I work with my teachers to provide a stimulating learning environment. Since Claremont opened in September 2004, we have worked toward this end. Claremont is a inner-city school with a can-do attitude and teachers that expect better than "good enough."
Students would work in groups of two, sharing one disposable camera with 27 exposures. We would need 30 cameras so all 60 students in the third grade can participate. The trip to Lincoln Park Zoo would require 2 buses.
A field trip is not a "free day" or a day out of school. It is a chance at a unique learning experience. Having an interesting project that ties the trip to the curriculum embeds that learning.
