This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is populated with diverse learners whom all have learning disabilities. A majority of the students have auditory processing difficulties, which makes it hard to take in information just by hearing it. They do much better to see everything they learn about.
An overhead projector, standard fair for an elementary classroom, can only display photocopied or hand written transparencies. At my school, that means no color photos and distortions when looking at selections from books. My students do not get a rich experience when interacting with this material.
A document camera would allow me to display for my entire class, using our existing CRT television, full color 2D (books, brochures, photos and maps) and 3D (rocks, leaves) specimens. I could set an actual quartz specimen next to an article in a science textbook and zoom in while telling them about it.
This tool will allow my students to see the world and learn in new ways. I can reach all of my students at once with engaging, true to life images that will stick with them. They will keep those images longer than the plain overhead projector images we have today.
