This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the dance teacher in a large and energetic school where creativity, respect for others, and trying our best are the keys to learning. Many of my students have never had dance before, while some have learned dance from family members or online via TikTok or Fortnite.

I love that my students are eager to explore dance and use their bodies to express themselves.

They are clearly curious about the different ways we can express ourselves through movement. They are most excited about ballet, tap, and yoga, but have asked about many dance styles and types of music! I can’t wait to teach it all to them.

My Project

My students are tackling a ton of challenges and distractions this year as they begin learning to dance with each other after two years of remote learning and many years without a performing arts teacher. The floor cushions will provide comfortable and flexible seating options when students need to sit on the floor for extended periods of time, such as when having class discussions or viewing dance videos for inspiration. Wearable pop wristbands will provide additional focus aids throughout the entire class, as they keep their hands free for movement.

A wireless headset mic will help students by letting them hear me clearly over my mask and the music.

The curtains and rods will be a wonderful and beautiful edition to the classroom, as they will be used to cover the wall mirrors which can be distracting and anxiety-inducing for new dancers still learning how to be comfortable moving their bodies together. Once the students have become more comfortable in their movement, we can pull the curtains back when we choose to check our alignments and dance formations!
