This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On a Thursday evening, word broke that school would be closing down indefinitely. Spooked and wanting to keep their children safe, most families kept students home on the Friday. Though students went home with books to read and packets of work, many left behind the tools of learning.
The vast majority of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
School closure has left my families more focused on providing for basic needs that replenishing school supplies. We have recently begun online virtual meetings. I have come face to face with the conditions under which my students are expected to learn. These include a lack of pencils, papers, and basic supplies. They include loud environments that challenge their ability to concentrate.
My students are trying their hardest to be focused and productive in this unprecedented time. I am so hopeful to give them the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
During virtual meetings with students, I have seen them bombarded with constant distractions. They struggle to focus on learning as noise and household activities interrupt. I have tried to support students to model and work out math problems only to find out that they have nothing with which to write.
I have adopted the quote that it is better to light a candle than curse the dark.
This project seeks to put paper, pencils, markers, and headsets in students hands so that the can get about the business of learning.
