My Students

Our 4th graders amaze me every day. They are part of our dual immersion program and have been since 1st grade. There are two classes, totalling 50 students. For half the day, students are in Spanish class where they learn Spanish Language Arts, culture, and science. In my English class, math and English language arts are taught. The students ability to speak and understand Spanish, formally and informally, is admirable. They are not only learning how to converse in Spanish, but also how to read and write using academic words and concepts.

Covid has taken a toll on many of our students, like all children during this pandemic.

During our soft closure, many of our students fell behind academically. After spending a great deal of time learning online, the students find focusing in a classroom challenging. Some days it is difficult to keep them focused long enough to read one chapter or write a summary. Having tools that allow students to fidget assists them in building endurance. This endurance will transfer to the amount of time they can focus. These tools include alternative seating and toys - both of which are not supplied by our school district.

My Project

Fidget toys and seats are self regulation tools that help students increase their attention and focus. These tools help students with ADHD, stress, and anxiety.

COVID has added stress to students' lives increasing anxiety within elementary children.

This anxiety has made learning challenging because students have a shorter attention span and are unable to calm themselves.

Fidget toys and seats create opportunities for students to move while still learning and working. Through these fidget items, students can self-regulate their stress, anxiety, and hyperactivity so they can succeed in the classroom.
