My Students
Our school is located on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. We are a Title I school with a high percentage (approximately 70%) of students living at or below the poverty level. Our school is a small, rural community school with less than 400 students in grades 4-8.
Despite the many challenges my students face, they are eager to learn and they love science.
I love being part of their journey in scientific knowledge and feel that it is my responsibility to get them excited about science so they will have an eagerness to learn in high school and college.
We are small but mighty. We have a lot of school spirit and it really is a great place to spend my time. We are very active in the community and focus on building positive relationships both in and outside of the school setting.
My Project
We have recently been recognized for being a Green School. As part of our journey, we are trying to recycle, reduce and reuse in our school.
The biodegradable straws and lunch trays will allow my students to see that we can reduce single-use plastics in our building and have a positive impact on the environment.
We will be promoting "Foam Free Fridays" where the environmentally friendly products will be used in the lunchroom. We will be able to compost the lunch trays and straws to produce beneficial material for our school gardens. Students will see that we can impact the waste stream coming from our school.
