My Students
My first grade students are excited about learning!
Most come from low-income families where reading and other educational materials are luxury items.
Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and some have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. When you donate to our classroom, you are changing lives! Thank you!
My Project
My students love science! They enjoy it even more when they get to EXPERIENCE it first-hand.
This project will give my first graders the opportunity to observe both ladybugs and butterflies in our classroom as they transform from the larvae stage to the chrysalis stage to adults.
I usually have six table groups, so I am requesting both a ladybug and butterfly life cycle set for each table group to use. I am also asking for a butterfly kit that would allow groups of two to three students to care for and observe their own butterfly larvae up close.
Every year we have scads of ladybugs that hatch in one particular area of our playground. Occasionally, a few eagle-eyed students spot the eggs beforehand. But, this last year we spotted one in its larvae stage! Neither my students nor I had ever seen one in person before, just in books. Unfortunately, a few of my students were absent that day and missed the opportunity to see it. It was a neat experience for those who were there. So, I am also requesting a ladybug habitat and larvae in the hopes that we ALL get to see these incredible ladybug life stages this next year.
Thank you for considering sponsoring this class project. I am looking forward to an exciting year of discovery and learning for both my new students and my kindergarteners from this year who will be with me for first grade in the fall.
