Fluent & Responsible, Native, Digital Citizens with steAm
My students need 2 iPads with sturdy cases to be closer to the class goal of being a 1 to 1 class with each student having their own iPad to use for 50 minutes each day.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I see approximately 350 students a year in the class, who the majority comes from homes without technology such as computers or iPads. I aim to challenge all students to be comfortable with iPads and computers, become knowledgeable, fluent and responsible, native, digital citizens this school year.
Who are the 350 students I see each year, that come into the classroom in school uniforms for 50 minutes each day, each hour and what are they like?
They are 6th, 7th and 8th graders. They are in the socioeconomic group who 85% are eligible for free and reduced lunches. Some students don’t speak English or limited English speaking. They are some mainstreamed students in this classroom that are not in any other class but this one. There are homeless students, many students living with grandparents and some students living in-group homes. There are also one-parent homes and then there are 2 parent homes. When they come to school though they come to learn and learn in a safe environment about technology and creativity as that is the 2 main focuses of the classroom. Technology is easy for some students with experience but all students have a curiosity about using and learning technology and take pride with what they learn and can do with technology.
My Project
I hope to be a 1 to 1 school this year with each student having access to an iPad. Students will use iPads to see the world through pictures. I would like to use the iPad with math and art programs were students learn math concepts by making art such as using tessellation apps and tangram apps. All students will this year create their own digital portfolio by scanning QR codes, photograph their art, write statements, give the art work a title and upload their art to Artsonia: the largest student web museum. Technology & art is a winning combination. Learning becomes fun, easy and rewarding. Students will gain job skills, keep up with the current job market and become native, digital citizens of the World Wide Web with these fun, bright, shiny toys that students will use and learn without being told they can't and it's too hard for them. In this class I have students teach students and then those students will teach their friends.
Donations to this project will improve this classroom, these students lives by giving them a chance, a chance to learn and use the latest technology every day they are at school and use it creatively to stretch those creative mind muscles.
They will use the iPads and art to learn math concepts.
My goal is for each student to have an iPad available to them for the 50 minutes they are in class and they will gain experience in math and art, & become knowledgeable, responsible, digital citizens.
