My students need timers to practice reading fluency and bags to keep the books they use to practice their reading fluency. We also need a storage rack and a large class timer.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in a first grade classroom... There is no such thing as typical! Currently my students are working on reading fluency, the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Our goal by the end of the year is to fluently read 47 words per minute.
My students are always full of energy and constantly surprising me while also challenging me to think of new ways to reach all of them.
My students come from a high poverty neighborhood located in Arizona. Our class has been blessed with 24 students from different parts of the world and whose first language is not English. We are a family that works towards the same goal, finding ways of learning that works best for us and never giving up.
My Project
The timers will be used to help students practice reading fluency with a partner. Reading fluency is important because it provides "a bridge between recognition and reading comprehension." When a reader is fluent they do not have to concentrate on the actual words. They can focus on what the text actually means. The simplest reason for why reading fluency is important is because without it, reading is not enjoyable. Students will use the timers and the book buddy bags to choose books that are of their reading level as well as interest level.
The key to reading fluency is not to make our students fast readers.
It is to show them that reading can be enjoyable. With first graders it is important to make things fun, and by using timers students will get to take their learning into their own hands. A large classroom timer will also allow students to practice building stamina during read to self. The book buddy bags will help students stay organized and the hanging rack will make it easier for my students to access their just right books.
