Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Children are in need of different kinds of resources in order to be motivated in learning how to read with fluency. As a first grade teacher who works in a school filled with students who are English Language Learners and come from low-socioeconomical backgrounds, it is difficult asking support from parents who themselves have difficulty with the English language. With this in mind, I do the best I possibly can to provide my students with the support that will allow them to become more successful in learning English and keeping them engaged in education. As five and six year old children who have just started first grade, they are faced with a lot of standards that need to be mastered by the end of first grade. Due to language barriers, it is very important to go on a slower pace and scaffold everything that is being taught with lots of outside resources. One of the first grade expectations is that the students should be able to read 60 words per minute by the end of the year. My students are currently reading about 15-20 words per minute. In order to reach that goal, I have requested additional resources that will help my students in reading more fluently. As we continue to practice reading more fluently, I want to expose my students to different forms of texts, not only books. For example, magazines, newspapers, scripts, poems and etc. Therefore I have requested addition resources such as: reader’s theater, partner books, fluency cards, word games, and pointers to explore the different kinds of materials. These resources will allow my students to practice reading in many ways and become more successful in first grade, which will later allow them to become more successful in other educational challenges during the rest of their schooling years.Since most of these students don't get the assistance they need at home from their parents, it is up to us to help these children become successful in learning the language. You will make it possible for my students to become prosperous learners.
