My Students
Our classroom consists of a diverse group of learners. The majority of my students come from lower income families who don't have access to quality, reading level-appropriate texts at home to practice reading skills.
They enjoy fiction books with interesting plots and characters.
Learning about interesting animals, inventions, and facts about things we have covered in science and social studies drives them to read nonfiction texts.
My readers love a challenge! Working with partners allows them to "teach" each other and build literary language. They love to talk and think like authors. These second grade learners prove the following quote by Mary Poppins to be true: "In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and 'snap,' the job is a game."
My Project
Students will use these classroom resources during our reading block. Resources will be used for independent, partner, and small group practice. The resources will provide opportunities to build reading skills through independent, partner, and small group practice.
Partners will work together to build fluency and comprehension.
Small groups will use comprehension cards to practice responding to both fiction and nonfiction texts. Struggling readers will practice sight word fluency through timed tests. Enrichment will be provided for higher leveled readers by using 3rd grade passages with corresponding comprehension questions. The paired passages will allow students to make connections between fiction and nonfiction.
