Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade teacher in the inner city. Most of our students are below level and need extra help or tutoring. My students struggle with reading.

Fluency is a big problem. They often have difficulty with the comprehension aspect of reading due to the intense focus to decode the words. If I can increase their fluency, my students will become better readers. The students will be able to focus on understanding what they read. They will no longer be just "word callers." Our district is moving towards making adequate yearly progress, but we are not there yet. This project can help point us in the correct direction towards that goal.

I would like the students to participate in reader's theater. It is a chance for the students to increase fluency as well as a way to learn to read with expression. The timers will allow the children to see growth over time. They will be able to use the listening activities in the centers as independent practice. If we can increase fluency the students will be more successful readers and may increase their confidence as well.

Your help will ensure that the fourth graders in my class will increase fluency and become successful readers. If we can mold students to be good readers they will have a great chance at being successful in all that they aim to be in life.
